I'm not much of a green thumb so I don't know a lot about caring for trees and plants, we have a crape mrytle outside our front door that has this black color to it and doesn't look good if you look underneath the leaves it looks like it has lice (best example I can think of...LOL) someone told me to get a spray bottle and mix a little dawn with water and spray it down, that doesn't seem to be really doing anything and I'm not sure what to do.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you look at the base of the tree and see a flare where the roots start to spread out? If not you need to dig or wash the soil away from the trunk. If the root flare is not exposed, then the tree bark will rot away at the base. The first symptoms are that the tree gets sick and bugs come and attack it.

Next I would spray every surface of the plant with liquid seaweed diluted at 3 ounces per gallon. If you don't have seaweed then spray with milk to the same dilution. The milk or seaweed helps the microbes that live on the surface of the tree fight off the pests.

Thanks for the reply, I will clear that tonight when I get home from work. we have mulch around everything in that section so I know that the root flare is covered.

I'll start there and then spray some of that solution on it as well.

thank you

I've cleared out around the base of the tree and sprayed it with the milk solution.

is there a time frame on how often I should be spraying it?

Milk is so easy to spray that I'd do it every week. Others say every 2 weeks.
