I have a white oak that has termites.

I uncovered the root flare and found them. They appear to go deep into the root flare and up the underside of the bark. When I bought the home the tree was in distress. I exposed the root flare, aerated out to the drip line, and applied sick tree treatment in March. Tree seems to be growing more leaves this summer. My question:

Do I need to try and treat the termites or let the tree recover on it;s own?

I tried to upload pics but kept getting error message

Thanks,

Lance

Hi Lance,

Kudos to you for giving your tree some TLC! :D

Check out the Natural Organic Library at: http://www.dirtdoctor.com/organic/garden/faq/

You get there by choosing "Learn" on the homepage, then choosing "Article Library".

You'll find good advice from Howard in the "termite" article. If it was me, I'd try a combination of introducing fire ants, and treating the soil with beneficial nematodes (both are mentioned in the "termite" article).

I'm with you, treat your tree with care and don't poison it with pesticides when it's already under stress. :(

Our oak tree -- which was under severe stress when we bought our house 3 years ago -- is now showing myriad signs of wellness as a result of our caring for it properly (and organically).

Howard has said that trees are very resilient. We have found it to be so, and hope you do, too!

Hope that helps!

Cara,

Thanks for the info.

Great article.

Does Howard have a recommended termite bait type? Fipronil is in liquid form only.

Also, Do you know how to reach the site administrator test99? I tried to send an email so I could get help to upload pics but the link to send a PM does not work for me. If anyone is a sit administrator and see's this note please email me.

Thanks,

Lance

Sorry for not getting back with you sooner.

I assume that since Howard recommended that product that the liquid is ok. I'm glad you found it.

As to your other question, are you a Ground Crew member? I am not, and pm doesn't work for me either. I could be wrong, but I just assumed that pm'ing only works for Ground Crew members.

Hope that helps!
