Does anyone know what this might be?
found on the outside of a metal door
very very dark brown-almost black
each spot about a quarter in size - 3 spots total near each other
standing out from door about 1 inch with thin spiny-ish shapes
when sprayed with water, becomes limp like hair, but later retains its prior shape-size.
removes easily with a scraper or even a shoe-
but what the heck is it???? :?

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you. ]

Do you really think it's a fungus? Are they possibly insect eggs? Is there a way to post a photo?

Sounds like something laid its eggs on the door. Even if it *doesn't* look like what you might think traditionally passes as eggs. I'd look it up in an insect key before scraping it off. Or call your local county agriculture extension agent--they are always a fount of information.

It sounds like one of the Myxomycete type fungi. I have seen them grow vertically with appearance like a sea urchin and also hanging down like a beard.

Contact me via email if you are interested in how to submit it to a local lab for ID.
