We are taking out 30 year old photinias and want to replace with something that minimizes the leaves, etc., that blow into the pool. They will be planted next to a 5' metal fence. Any recommendations?

Full sun? How tall do you want them to be at maturity?

There are many Holly varieties that would be evergreen and tall. Savannah holly gets 20' or more; Nellie R. Stevens is 10' or more.

Those are good tips. You might also consider abelia - small leaves and small white flowers.

Thanks for the help. The area is full sun and I want to keep whatever I use at a height of no more than 5'. I thought about holly, but am concerned about someone falling against them and getting hurt.

One of the reasons for getting rid of the photinias (in addition to their age -almost 30 yrs old) is the mess they put in the pool. I'd like to find something that "sheds" as little as possible. Evergreen would be great. I don't mind trimming whatever I put in to keep it at the height I want.
