This week on 60 Minutes, Dr. Sanjay Gupta reports on new research coming out of some of America's most respected institutions, which find that sugar-- the way it's being consumed by Americans today-- is a toxin. And it could be the driving force behind some of this country's leading killers, including heart disease.

How fructose builds belly fatDr. John McGahan of U.C. Davis explains his research, which shows that in overweight and obese people, consumption of 25% of their calories as fructose quickly leads to an increase in belly fat.

I have a few jars left of a batch of some grape jelly that I made three years ago, a bit too old to eat at this point. I empty one jar into a bucket, stir it until the jelly is dissolved, and I pour it on the garden. It's more concentrated than the dry molasses but it seems to have the same effect. I also pour the sugar water from canned peaches into the garden, and any old soft drinks.

This said, I don't drink soft drinks any more and I don't eat that much jelly. But if you have these things to discard, the last place you should put them is in the trash or down the drain. Feed your soil with the sugar to stimulate healthy biological activity!

Sugar is NOT a toxin. It is a necessary basic nutrient. The human body runs on sugar/carbs. Sugar provides the body with the required energy for us to keep up with our hectic daily lives. Fat is the problem.People don't drop dead from heart disease because their arteries are clogged with sugar.
Americans today like to hear good things about their bad habits."You mean I can eat all the bacon I want! Cool" This type of information is what causes such high numbers of obesity and heart disease. Those "gurus" that push this idea tend to be obese themselves while pro sugar individuals are almost always lean long term.

This goes beyond a simple binary of sugar is good or bad. I would dispute gour claims about fats - too long the poor stepchild in the nutritional debate, you need good fats in your diet just as you need healthy types and amounts of sugar.
