Earlier this spring Wood Ducks with young were common along the creek and ponds of the Eldorado Country Club in McKinney. I have not seen one in almost a month, seems surprising that they would disappear after nesting. Mallards are still common, some with young.

These photos were taken near the golf course earlier this year.

I worked as a park ranger for the US Army Corps of Engineers in Monroe, LA, in 1980, and one of the projects I was involved with was putting up nesting boxes for wood ducks. They used baldcypress posts and lumber to make the boxes and the time of year we put them up (think post hole diggers) the land was exposed, but they were intended for when the marsh would be inundated. The boxes were about 10 feet up and when nesting season came along the water would be at least 4-6 feed deep and the ducks would be attracted to the box nests. It was quite a fascinating exercise!

Sounds like it was an interesting project.

The Heard Museum in McKinney has a nest box program. In addition to Wood Ducks they have another beautiful duck using their nest boxes, the Hooded Merganser.
