We planted this live oak in fall 2012. This past winter it started developing moss on the upper branches, and it has spread since then. The nursery man I bought the tree from said moss is common and not to worry, but this seems pretty serious and I don't want to lose the tree. We have used "sick tree treatment" twice since April and we've been careful about watering it. This full shot of the tree is a little hard to see but most of the upper branches have no leaves. Thanks for any help you can provide.

The tree is in Bastrop County, near Smithville.

It looks too deep in the ground. Pull the dirt carefully away from the base until you reveal the tree flare and the tree should at least be a bit healthier.

Better view of root flare. I was aware of this issue when we planted the trees and tried to plant them high enough in the ground….

It's not going in straight as a fence post, but I suspect you can expose a couple of more inches of flare at least there. This doesn't answer your moss question, but it may answer why the tree is in stress.

Now I'v exposed this much. Is it too much? I'll put a light layer of mulch over it to help it retain moisture.

Looks good. See my other post - the sick tree treatment can help that soil, and mulch is a plus, just don't cover the flare again.
