Zone 6 but also keep a worm farm in the basement year-round. Our seasons are short in Mi and it may take a while for plants to cover an Arbor but we don't have to worry about Kudzu either.

What you lack in a longer season duration you make up for with extra daylight in the summer. One growing season is okay - you know when it begins and ends. Down here in Texas the early season starts so early you almost miss the tender crops (lettuce, peas), and have to start the fall crop in the middle of the summer heat (an uphill battle!) As far as I know, no kudzu in Texas (but Tennessee, where I was a park ranger in the Great Smoky Mountains, is full of it!)

What kind of gardening do you do? Crops? Ornamentals? Other?

:) I really like native plants that host catepillers and shrubs that fruit for the berry eating birds. I also try to have flowers blooming from spring to fall for the bees.

Native Plants 8) First year they sleep
8) Second year they creep
8) Third year they leap
8) So plant some today!

I'm glad you don't live next to me with some of the critters you're luring to the yard! Caterpillars are okay in some parts of my yard, but not in the vegetable garden. I also have things out there for wildlife (particularly late in the season and over the winter), but drawing a line between my harvest and animal harvest is a challenge.
