I have several dramatic beds of Cheddar Pink Firewitch dianthus, each about 50sf+!! This year, after bloom and deadheading, they started to die off.

Many of the plants appear to have "dried out", crumble when touched, etc. Mainly from the center of the beds outward. We had an unusually wet spring here in Dallas this year, but they are not watered overmuch now, and in no change from past.

Additionally, the beds are about 8 years old. This happened to me at another house under very similar circumstances - wet spring, approx 8 year old plants. I bring up the latter as the stand-up varieties of dianthus don't last too many years, so I'm wondering if there's a correlation.

Any help is appreciated :)
