I live in Central MA (1 hr West of Boston, MA). My lawn is 3 yrs young and I am looking to thicken it up and get it greener. I am looking to overseed this weekened after I run my de-thatcher. I was told by a HD rep to use a KY Bluegrass or Rye Grass seeing as I have an irrigation system and watering isn't an issue. Agree/Disagree? Grass type suggestions? Should I also hit it w/ Starter Fert after I spread it? Lastly- any suggestions on watering cycles for an irrigation system? 20 minutes a zone, 10 min in morning, 10 minutes at night??

Thanks

Welcome to organic turf management. My suggestions will not include starter fert because there is no organic starter fertilizer. I will give you plenty to think about, though.

First back out of this message and look at the top of the lawns forum for the FAQ on organic lawn care. Read that, copy it to your hard drive, or whatever. When you have read that, if you still have any questions, then come back.

I'm also going to have to punt on grasses in your clime. I'm a southern guy ever since that short stint in Ohio.

If you continue with organic turf maintenance and change your watering habits, you can sell your dethatcher to someone still using chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
