My fig truee - "Gertrude" ;-> - is now about 10 feet high. I'm interested in "topping" the tree so that I won't have to climb it next year to get the figs. Is it a good idea to top it at 6 - 7 feet high? If so, when should I do it - winter?

Stubby, the tree topper...

Winter would be fine and height looks good.

1]Never take more than 1/3 from the height and prune every other year.
2]I might suggest you remove one or two of the lower main branches about 1/2 to stimulate lower growth folage.
3]Mulch well and figs have a shallow root system.
4] Enjoy your figs first, then the birds.
