 Post subject: Recipe for Garrett Juice

I'm new to this site and probably have a blight situation going on with tomatoes. It was on another site that Garrett Juice would be good. Is this the compost juice? I'm in desperate need of organic deterrer of insects for the garden.Most of the commercial ones are too expensive. Need help!! Thanks for your time.

I need some clarification. I think I have been making my Garrett Juice wrong. I have never made compost tea ahead of time. I mix 1 cup compost per gallon of water. Everything else is exactly according to recipe. I didn't realize I needed to make compost tea and then use the tea for Garret Juice. Also, if I make compost tea, how long will it last. I do use an aerator when I make Garrett Juice and I use my own compost. Thanks for the help.

I still have the same question. Do I have to make the tea and THEN use it to make GArrett Juice or is Garret Juice just a pumped up compost tea and I can make it all at once as I have been doing? I have watched the videos and read the articles and none of them seem to be exactly the same. For example at the bottom of this article he talks about adding stuff to your compost tea to make it even more powerful. I am assuming things like the ingredients to Garret JUice and that he means as it brews. Sorry to be so dense!

Here is exactly what I have been doing:
5 gallons water
5 cups homemade compost
5 oz. molasses
5+ oz. liquid fish
5 oz. liquid seaweek
5 oz. apple cider vinegar
Aerate for 24 hours

Is this ok? Thanks for help and patience(i hope)!

Make the tea. Then use it as an ingredient in making the Juice.

I have another dense question that I can't figure out. First, I am new to organic gardening and appreciate all of the excellent guidance from Howard and the rest of the team.

For the past few months, I have been buying Garrett Juice Plus at my local Lowes and spreading it on my lawn, shrubs, trees, etc.

Now, I am ready to take the next step and make my own compost tea and Garrett Juice. I am confused because everywhere I read, the instructions indicate that the living organisms began to die off once the aeration stops. Then, does this not make the Garrett Juice sold in stores ineffective?

Also, one more ?. If I am making compost tea, wouldn't it be more beneficial to just make Garrett Juice then spread on lawn, shrubs, trees, etc? It seems this is more better and not that much more work.

Fresh is always best, but the Garrett Juice that is made commercially is a stable product with most of the excellent properties of the fresh mix.

There is no standardized definition for "compost tea." I don't know how it is produced now, but the "compost tea" produced at Garden-Ville for the Garrett Juice product was more of a highly filtered compost leachate than a true tea. Since there is no definition, they called it compost tea. But yes, if there were any living organisms in the bottle, they would all be dead by the time it gets to the store.

From what I saw you can make a better compost additive by dipping a sock full of compost into water, plunging it around, squeezing the sock, and then removing the sock. Immediately use that in your Garrett Juice. Or you can go to the trouble of making real actively aerified compost tea.

Apple cider vinegar. It's the vinegar that is good for it, and apple cider vinegar is as affordable as any. You don't want to get into the acetyl vinegars that are made from petroleum products.

The Vinegar Institute FAQs state:

Is “Acetic Acid” the Same Thing as Vinegar?

No. The United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recognizes that diluted acetic acid is not vinegar, indicating that it is:

“misleading if the labeling of a food in which acetic acid is used implies or suggests that the food contains or was not prepared with vinegar. Acetic acid should not be substituted for vinegar in pickled foods, which consumers customarily expect to be prepared with vinegar.”


And if it isn't natural or usable by humans and animals, it shouldn't be used in your garden.

My understanding is the vinegar alters the pH and improves shelf life for commercial products. If you are making your own, use it immediately after you make it and you don't need the vinegar. I believe my source on this is Malcolm Beck from about 10 years ago.
