Are there any health issues with a vegetable garden sitting on top of an active septic drain field? We have very sandy soil with excellent drainage (no green streaks in the summer). Thanks.

This is an opinion. I'd look at what the family was flushing into the septic system. Anything in the system that isn't neutralized can be absorbed by the plants. Basically, I'd avoid planting food crops in a septic field!

I have a septic field also and the only thing I will plant on top is grass because I don't want the roots to get into the PVC and plug up the holes. I don't want or need the field dug up for repair. I would suggest the same for you. I had thought about planting my garden there but changed my mind. It is the greenest grass in the yard and grows the fatest. Also don't plant trees to close either for fear the roots will damage the PVC.I planted my trees atbout 20 - 30 feet away. I imagine eventually the roots will grow to the field, but I hope it will not be for many years until the trees are tall.
