I have hundreds of small holes, about the size of a asprin, in my yard. They are surrounded by a mound of fine dirt. It has just happened in the last few days, since it has rained.

What is making these holes?

Thanks for your help.

Are the little mounds of dirt like little balls? These might be earthworm castings. You didn't say where you live but they take different forms depending on how much sand or clay is in the soil. If it rains after they kick up the castings, the rain softens them into a little mound. Dig down carefully and look to see if the holes go down into the ground. We have some pretty large earthworms in north Texas. I've pulled up some as big around as my pinky finger and as long as 10 inches. If that's what it is, good for you! That's a problem we would all be lucky to have. Earthworms do that especially when the ground is very wet.

The other option is that it could be ground wasps. They're beneficial but can be a little territorial. If you don't see them around though, I'll be it's the earthworms.

Thanks for the reply!
I think they are earthworm. I live in Granbury and we've had rain in the last couple of days.

I am going to put no-lo bait out this weekend, do you think it will hurt the earthworms?

You're welcome! Aren't you happy you have such a dandy herd in your yard? I am! If you like to fish, you're set for the season!

No, the NOLO bait won't hurt the earthworms. It is a specific pathogen directed at crickets and grasshoppers and closely related insects. It works well if you put it out when these guys are small. Now is good timing, in all likelihood. Hope that works for you.
