It was such a nice Monday I was out in the yard, cleaning up. I was out in the lawn when I noticed numerous, too numerous to count, piles of dirt. These piles of dirt are about 1"-2" high and look almost like small pellets of dirt. any ideas?

They are worm piles (just dirt), not castings (poop). Still they are showing you have active worms. They may be showing you that there is a problem a few inches down. Look into either hard pan or too much water a few inches below the surface.
