I have a red leaf photinia tree that is infested with termites. The tree is dying and I would like to remove it so it can be replaced, but I don't want to open it up and have the termites to everywhere. What is the best way to accomplish this? We would like to do this ourselves as we can't afford a service to come out and clean it up.

Also, once the termites are dealt with and we remove the tree, what is the best way to remove the stump, short of having it dug up and having a sink hole left in our back yard?

Thank you for any help.

The termites in this situation are absolutely no problem. First, they are not hurting the plant. Termites only attack dead wood, never living and healthy tissue in plants. Sounds like the plant is really sick and a poor choice anyway so remove it anytime. Leave the stump in the ground and plant a new pant nearby. You can spray and kill the termites with orange oil-based products but it is unnecessary.
