Hello! We have two pear trees in our back yard (we just bought the house in November)... I had thought they were Bradford Pears, and perhaps they are, but the fruit on them does not look right. It looks just like a bartlett-type pear in shape and color, but is much smaller. Each pear is about 3-4 inches long. Does this still sound like a Bradford?

Also, a young tree, that I think was planted last year, is in another part of our back yard. Is there any way to find out what kind of tree it is, such as taking a branch to a nursery?

The 4th tree in our back yard is another mystery to me. It produced yellow-green, slightly pyramid-shaped seed pods. I guess you'd call them pods, anyway... they are formed by 3 leaves lightly connected and forming a roundish pyramid/cone shape. It's a rather tall tree. The seed pods are dropping off now and it is a mess!

Thanks for helping my curiosity!

Lisa

The fruit on a Bradford Pear is very small.
Quote:
The fruits are small and round, less than 1 inch in diameter, hardly resembling the traditional pear in appearance.

So my guess is that they are not Bradford Pears. I don't even know if you can actually even eat them.

My 2 Cents,
Chad

I wonder what they are. I think they are edible, based on what the previous owner said about the trees. She said they turned out to be better for canning and cooked recipes than eating fresh, however. I am puzzled about what kind of pear they are, though.
