Hi Bill. Do you know what kind of grass you have? Not that it makes a big difference in fertilizer, but we can help you care for it.
Corn gluten meal is an expensive fertilizer but it works!! I prefer to use ordinary ground corn for about 1/6 the cost. You can apply CGM at 5-10 pounds per 1,000 square feet any day of the year, rain or shine. I apply ordinary corn meal at 10-20 pounds per 1,000 because of the reduced protein content.
The schedule I use in San Antonio is to apply fertilizer first on Washington's Birthday. Then I apply again on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. I call it the Federal Holiday Plan. Those dates are easy to remember so I stick with them. I came about that schedule by watching the growth and greening performance of my lawn throughout a 2-year period. The first application happens to be about 3 weeks prior to our last frost date. In your area I would do something similar for the first date but then see how the apps go on the holidays.
