Has anyone tried composting first with black soldier fly and then feeding the remains to earthworms? I'm interested in breeding the black soldier fly indoors. Any insights?

No, but I googled black soldier fly and realized those were the flies and larvae that I kept tossing out of my red wigglers  .

Gardening and worms--keep me humble all the time.

I started composting with soldier flies accidentally a few years ago after throwing a bunch of pumpkins in the bin, they followed me when I moved (OK, I actually packed and moved my compost - sick man).

I would not do them inside... they tend to have periodic migrations when they go from the white maggot stage tot he grey/black pupae(?) stage and they aren't real cute.

No need to do them inside though, they infest my HOT compost bin very nicely and I tend to leave all my food scraps on top for them. I use a converted trash can - the big kind cities give you - with a few hundred 1/4" holes drilled in it so there is a lid. The flies get in/out through the holes and out-eat (or maybe just eat) the housefly larvae.

Why recompost their poo through worms though? these guys leave little behind, basically a layer of sludge on top of the compost which they seem to re-eat once the food is gone.

I haven't done worms yet - it's hot here in summer and I worry that they'd overheat and croak on me, soldier flies can handle very very hot temps - when the pile is too hot they migrate back and forth through it to get to the side the sun isn't hitting and mix the compost (presumably, they are quite good at digging with that hard, pointy head).
