You could over seed it with winter rye. This Wednesday would be a perfect time. Spread a little compost evenly over the sod first.

We have a house under construction that we are hoping will be completed in a few weeks. The builder includes a pretty significant landscape package, including full sod. I realize that fall is not an ideal time to plant sod as it will not establish itself very well before it's winter dormancy period. My question is: What precautions can I take now to help the newly installed sod survive the winter and get a good start in the spring? |

I was afraid someone would suggest rye...the issue with rye is...well...you see, I love maintaining a beautiful lawn as much as anyone and I take great pride in having a nice lawn....but I kinda look forward to late fall and winter when the grass goes dormant and it's demands on me are very minimal. Just call me lazy I guess. Are there ANY other options besides rye?

Bermuda seems to grow well in my veggie garden--any time of the year    . Who needs a gym, when you have bermuda invasion? I'm in the Dallas area.I don't know where you live? If further South, the sod might have time to establish. We had to take a tree down, and my husband had placed sod on it, that was not doing well at all. I put some home brewed vermicompost tea on it, and it greened and flourished in just a couple of days. My guess is with a new build, the yard has been "scraped". There won't be much in the way of living organisms left in those areas--a good brew of compost tea with molasses might get your sod/yard established with some beneficial micro-organisms and faster, stronger root health and growth. Don't worry about it and whatever you do, DO NOT OVERSEED WITH RYE. Be sure the sod is rolled down, though. Roots cannot grow through the air to reach soil. Water the dormant grass once a month unless you get 1 inch of rain that month. Start with organic fertilizer 3 full weeks prior to the last frost date in your neighborhood. |
