Post subject:  Bermuda - Correcting problems caused by excess mowing

There are several threads here and items on the Dirt Doctor web site about mowing such that no more than 1/3rd of the grass is removed. (http://www.dirtdoctor.com/Grass-Mowing_vq74.htm)

There are a few areas in my lawn where the grass has become very "leggy." In these areas there is almost no stolon growth, I see very little new growth from rhizomes, and there is only a small amount of green leaf at the tip of the stems.

I am looking for advice on how to resolve this issue (here in August). Should I do a one-time cut with the mower deck lowered one notch, then start mowing more frequently at the normal height so each mowing does not violate the 1/3rd removal rule?

I mow weekly, but with all of the spring rain, the early summer growth was very rapid. As a result I was probably removing over 50% of the height of the grass with each weekly mowing leading to the leggy growth.

Suggestions are appreciated

Bermuda should be mowed at the mower's lowest setting all the time for maximum density. When it gets up to 1.5 to 2 inches it can thin out considerably. When bermuda is mowed lower than 1 inch it starts to take on a horizontal growth habit that looks much different from most grasses. Look at a putting green if you get a chance. The bermuda stems are all horizontal and only the blades grow upright.

Mowing 2x per week is the way to keep from cutting too much off.
