Post subject:  water drainage problem

I'm having a HUGE problem getting the water to drain on the side of my house. It's almost ALWAYS wet.

Is there anything I can do without putting in a french drain and/or regrading the whole side?

Regrading is the best answer. A finish grader could be done in a morning. Then you will have to resod or reseed. Have the grader mix in some compost while he's at it.

French drain might be even more expensive than regrading. Certainly it takes longer to design and install.

If you want to try something that is not mechanical, try a deep layer of compost on top of the soil right there. If you have had standing water, you have lost microbial health of that soil. Compost should help to restore that health. Then add some cheap animal feed like alfalfa meal or corn meal to help the soil microbes become healthier again. The idea with this is to restore microbial health so that the microbes will dig down deep and open up the soil allowing water to drain.

I would put gutters on the house and drain them into a large container. Now you can use the rain water to water your garden.

I'd like to help but need more info. :?

Can you describe where the water is coming from?
Roof overhang? With or without gutters? Where are the down spouts?
Is the house new? Property may not have been graded right to begin with.
Neighbors? Is your home foundation set lower?
Some times it's easier to solve the problem at it's source.
