How can we get our St Augustine grass to thicken up. The grass is shaded by the fence in the early morning, a neighbors tree mid-day, but gets some sun mid and late afternoon.

Take down the fence and the neighbor's tree.

Any grass in the shade is going to be thinner. You might try raising your mower as much as you can and keep the corn meal on it every 60-90 days. A fungal disease could thin out the grass before you realize what's happening. Corn meal will prevent that.
