I'm planning on aerating my lawn this spring then spreading a mixture of compost, lava sand, dry molasses and cormeal on it. Is now a good time to do that or should I wait until after our average last freeze date here, which is between March 20-25? Also, after the aeration, would it be a good time to spread nematodes too?

I would aerate and get those ammendments out ASAP. You want them to have a chance to do some work before the plants are up and growing. Probably would wait on the Nematodes unil it is warmer.

Getbrg,

What's the weather like up in WF? In the D/FW area we seem to be in a wet weather pattern with rain every couple of days. If rain is in the near forecast, I would delay any aeration as it is my experience that you may miss out on some of the benefits when the rain "collapses" your holes. I will say that aeration is the single method that I see the most visible benefit. I will also add that because of the frequency of Spring rains, I have had better luck when having my aeration performed in the early Fall.

As far as the ammendments, yes apply them with your aeration, but I don't think that you will miss much from the delay.

Rather than using lava sand, I would recommend using expanded shale. Years of university research shows that expanded shale is very beneficial in terms of (1) holding water and nutrients and releasing them back out to the roots when the surrounding soil dries out and (2) holding air and supplying it to the roots to improve the soil profile.

Expanded shale is an organic product that looks similar to pea gravel but contains thousands of tiny pores and capillaries, which allow it to hold and release the water and air.

I only bag and sell expanded shale because I believe in it. The research was done over many years by various universities. Howard endorses this product as well.

If I were going to the trouble of aerating, I would go ahead and use the expanded shale. You'll be amazed at the resulting root growth. Also, since expanded shale is a porous ceramic particle, it won't break down over time. That means you only need to apply it once!

Why do you want to do all that stuff to your lawn? Are there symptoms of something you want to clear up?

In general all you should need is corn meal or other organic fertilizer. Unless you have had a recent chemical spill, the rest of that stuff should not be needed.
