what is the purpose of this product for st augustine lawns?

It is a sugar with minerals. It feeds the biodiversity in the soil. Molasses is a good cheap product to bring up the health of poor or chemical laced soils.

Plus if you use dry molasses, you are adding organic matter (usually dry rice hulls) to your soil in addition to a quick & easy food source for the microbes.

It's also a terrific additive for the compost pile to heat things up and speed the breakdown of matter.

Ratio of us is usually half a cup of liquid molasses to a gallon of water, and spread it as thick or thin as the budget allows in dry form.
