I don't have quite as much turf as you (only 8500sqft here), but I just use the Scotts 2000 drop spreader. Haven't spread lava sand yet, but I did spread green sand with it. Best tip I can give you is to not fill the hopper all the way up with sand. I found that filling about half at a time worked great.

The Scott's whirly spreader seems to work the best. It has a small beater wire at the bottom which helps to keep product moving. The biggest problem I have encountered is wet or damp product. This will clog most any spreader. Use dry product!

I just threw away a Scotts drop spreader. Those plastic things can't take much use and NO abuse.

Out of curiousity, how long did the Scotts drop spreader last for you? How much turf are you fertilizing?

I just got mine in the spring & have only used a couple times so far. About 8500 sqft of lawn.

Thanks

I had it for years and used it about 5 times. The rest of the time it hung from the wall.

I've had mine for 8-10 years & it is working fine. Rinse it out & store it properly - it will last a long time.

My Scotts spreader works ok, I guess, I just can't see any difference in the settings. Same am't comes out no matter if its on 3 or 12...
I did notice the other day the the plastic is cracked so I suppose using it as a wheelbarrow was not too good for it.

I did that, too. Do you think that was my problem?
