I'm a newbie, so sorry for any ignorance on my part. I have what I believe to be a St. Augustine lawn. I have noticed over the last week that there is a grey fungus-like growth on the ground in small patches. This is in the back yard which is highly shaded by trees so there is not much grass back there. I rubbed the stuff with my shoe and it doesn't rub off. (not easily anyway) I also watered it a little to see if it would wash off...it didn't. Can anybody help me with this? I don't have much of a lawn in the back yard so I don't want something killing it off. Oh, I checked the front yard and I don't see any out there. Thanks, |

I have the same conditions and same problem. My problem seems to come up when the grass is wet at night. This seems to include my dog peeing on the grass at night. I'm familiar with dog urine spots and these are not them. I have a fungus. One of the great things about fungus problems in turf is that they all respond to treatment using corn meal. Yes, it's the same corn meal you buy at the grocery store. I get mine a lot cheaper at a feed store. Fifty pounds is about $5. To control fungus already in your yard, apply it at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet and give it 3 weeks to show some improvement. I've been applying the corn meal every time I water (every 10 days) until I see improvement. It's so cheap and relatively harmless that what the heck! Corn meal works by attracting a beneficial fungus that becomes a disease to the fungus killing your grass. It works everywhere in the garden, so if you're getting mildew on other plants, give it a whirl elsewhere. |

I notice this problem on my Bermuda grass after many days of rain, not so much from just watering it late at night. Patches of gray here and there, and when you brush your foot over it, the residue that's on the grass will blow away like smoke. A dark spot sill exists near the soil, but it doesn't kill the grass. It ususally goes away after a week, so I never bother using a corn meal treatment. Maybe I should, just for preventative medicine since it is so cheap. |
