Post subject:  "good" weed / "bad" weed question

I thoroughly read a great many of the threads on this forum and, while one of them touched on my question, I'd still like to explore this more thoroughly.

I love oxalis, clover, horseherb, dichondra, and many of the other "weeds" that are part of the lawn we got when we bought our house. That said, we also have crab grass, sand burs, dandelions, spiky dandelions (?), and other undesirables.

So here's the question, if we amend our soil routinely as recommended on this site with rock powders, Garrett Juice, worm castings, DE, and compost can we skip putting down CGM?

My understanding of CGM is that it prevents weed germination. My understanding of "weed" is some of the plants I like that I listed above. I'd be very unhappy if my dichondra or oxalis didn't come up. So, I'm thinking maybe I don't want to put down CGM. :|

On the other hand, I sure like the idea of CGM killing the grass burs, spiky dandelions, and crab grass etc.
(Obviously, we've got more "weeds" than grass)

I'm also going to post in the "lawn" forum b/c I want to know about this from a grass angle, too, but will appreciate hearing more about the issue of overall improvement in soil health as it relates to "weeds".

Thank you!
Cara

Simply fertilizing will cure the grass burs. They only grow in infertile soil. Dandelions grow in short grass. Crabgrass grows in short grass that is watered frequently.

If you like the dichondra don't get too upset if it disappears in the summer. It will be back next spring. There is a beetle that will wipe out as much dichondra as you have in the warm weather. As wimpy as dichondra is, St Augustine can be choked out by it. Same with oxalis.
