Something is eating the leaves on my new desert willow. I live in Alpine. The tree is still in the container it came in. When I moved it from the fenced yard to an open area planning to plant it today something ate the leaves overnight. We have lots of mule deer but I am told they do not eat this plant.

Was the plant stripped of leaves, or simply nibbled? What sometimes happens with nursery plants that have been watered well is that when they are placed in an otherwise dry area, the moist vegetation is attractive to foraging animals. You may need to put a temporary wire cage around or over this plant as it gets established (and depending on how large it is). Or spray it with a garlic pepper tea or something like deer-scram.
