Some of the heirloom varieties are not as heat-tolerant as the hybrid varieties. If one is setting, and the other is not, I would tend to think it is something like weather conditions, unless it has some symptoms of illness, but when my tomatoes have blight, they still set fruit. The heirlooms that I have read are more tolerant of the heat are Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Arkansas Traveller, and I have found that Sungold (I think that is one of the old varieties) and the Green Zebra are doing well so far. Brandywine? This will be my last attempt with them. They don't stand up to the heat from what I can see.

Mortgage Lifter is a variety that is reported to do well in the south. This is my first year growing it and it has set fruit. However, the foliage is already starting to look bad. There are a lot of folks with a lot of heirloom tomato knowledge on the Garden Web "Growing Tomatoes" forum. It's a great place to get info and feedback on specific varieties.
