Post subject:  Potted pepper plants

I am trying to pot peppers and possibly tomatoes for seasonal growth and would like to over-winter them in a greenhouse. What is the best potting mixture? I have 2-5 gallon pots and wonder if these plants would need to be repotted at any time. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

Use at least 50% mature compost, and any potting mix of your choice.
I usually feed my peppers and tomatoes a high phosphorus feed from corn meal and aerated compost tea recipes, loaded also with seaweed and molasses.

Henman,
The Good Captain is correct. I made my own potting soil with top soil and compost. I bought 2-40 lbs bags of top soil from Lowes and mixed about 50% of the top soil with 50% compost. The compost was not quite finished. I dumped the first bag of top soil into the wheelbarrow and the first box of compost on top. I mixed the two ingredients by hand until they were mixed real well. The compost looked like finished compost. I have used this mixture to repot seedlings, that I started in my seed starting trays. So far the seedlings are doing real well. In fact they are growing so fast that they may get to be 1 - 2 feet tall before it is time to plant them in the garden. If you follow the Captains and my receipes, your plants should do real well. BTW, the top soil was only $1.10 for each 40lbs bag and the compost was free from my compost bins.
