I want to feed my chickens something besides commercial feed. Can anyone tell me how to make feed for them or where to get organic feed?

chickens can eat cracked corn but I would supplement that with some alfalfa and of course some oyster shell for calcium supplement. Give them all of your vegetable waste and peels, just chop it up and get it to them while its fresh. You can raise earthworms for them and use the worm castings to enrich your soil.

During warm seasons they can eat green vegetation, bugs and worms, seeds, etc.

Chickens are omnivores, not herbivores. Meat is a staple in their diet when they are left to their own devices. Let them out in the garden and they will find plenty to eat.

Google Joel Salatin's chicken ration. It doesn't use animal protein (fish technically not animal) and soy protein for chickens. I used the ration for my broiler chickens and they had amazing growth and health. They also have access to new grass on a daily basis. He also has a bit different ration percentages for hens and you would want to give oyster shell as well. You have to mix the ration yourself unless you want about a ton mixed at a time by a granary.
