Is there a good recipie for both seed starter mix and transplant mix that does not contain peat?

If not a recipie is there a commercial product?

Vermiculite is often used.

Any particular reason you are wanting to avoid use of peat?

Vermiculite all by itself? Or with other things?

I don't like peat because it is too hard to get it wet. It does not encourage beneficial bacteria.

Coconut coir is getting quite popular now as a fantastic and better alternative to peat moss. I don't remember the specifics, but there's something beneficial about then, and if I remember correctly, Malcolm Beck mentioned during a 2010 round table that he did a trial with coir versus peat and the coir was much better.

But the important question everyone is really asking, is this: how in the world do you say coir? Is it "core"? Or is it "choir"? Because I've been saying "choir". See everybody later!

Peat moss is good for storing your potatoes in after you dig them because it is a relatively sterile medium - nothing grows in it. But Howard doesn't recommend it for much of anything in the garden around healthy soil.

If you visit the Organic Guides page you'll find lots of tips for getting started with various organic gardening activities. And search the forums by category also, for topics that have come up and been answered.
