Sadly we have retired the bird feeder because of rats. They are attracted to the debris that falls from the feeder. If anybody has any ideas on how we can feed birds and discourage rats we would be appreciative. We have a dog so we cannot put out poison.

I have dogs that kill rats. I don't let the dogs out near the bird feeders or they'd eat the bird seed, but if any rat gets into their area, it is history.

Saw this on a website about organic pest control. Don't know if your dogs might try to eat it though...

"•Use half corn flour and half cement powder mix as bait for the rats. They will eat the mixture and eventually consume water, which will result in a chemical reaction with the cement mix and ultimately lead to their death. The negative of this process is the uncertainty of where the rat has died within a residence."

NOTE:::This is NOT an endorsement of this method. Eventually, you may want to get a really MEAN cat...

My personal favorite is a deer blind and a scoped .22 :D

I don't encourage the dogs to go after rats, you never know if they've already gotten into a poison. But I think my neighbors all know that the dogs are here and use spring traps where they need them on their property. That's what I prefer, but have to set them where the dogs won't get clobbered by them.
