Post subject: | Bois d'arc fruit aka horse apple |
I borrowed a pic from A&M. http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/FLORA/fa01/fa01061.jpg I couldn't seemto find a photo pf the tree. However I have seen a few of these trees about to drop fruit along W. Vickery and along Davis Blvd in N richland Hills. Look for old home sites and areas that had once been disturbed. I have never heard of this as a roach control but i wish you all great luck! |

Bois d'arc is also called Osage orange. It has large brain-looking round fruits, bright (chartreuse) green. They have a sticky milky-white juice when you cut into them. The trees do tend to be along fence lines and old roads. But they're in town also. I pass one on Sycamore School Road in Fort Worth, a couple of blocks west of I-35, north side of the street. They fall off of the tree and roll into the curb and Sycamore School is a busy road. So pull onto a side street and walk back if you see they're in season on the ground. Here's a good look at one: http://www.caughtintimephotography.com/osage.html And here's a site that apparently sells them over the internet: http://www.mcmullans.org/canal/osage_orange.htm Northwesterner |

Should have looked a littler farther: here's a site with the tree, the bark (very distinctive), the fruit, all in one place: http://www.forestry.auburn.edu/samuelso ... orange.htm |
