I recently noticed brown/black spots on multiple plants in both my back and front yard. The spots seem the worst on a group of purple potato plants and a group of sunflower sprouts, but they are also appearing on my mint plant (potted) and are pretty bad on some salvia plants. Today, while I was inspecting the spots, I discovered that almost all of the spotted plants have the same bugs on them - small beetle looking guys with bright red bellies and yellow/black striped backs. They are a little bigger than a ladybug. I live in Dallas. I sprayed some water mixed with the natural dish soap I use this afternoon, which was recommended to me before by a garden store owner for minor pests, and now there are far fewer of the bugs present, but I also had a lot of ladybugs and don't want to harm them... Any ideas? I have pics, but they are too big to upload... |

It looks like a fourlined plant bug (pages 71-72 in Howard's Texas Bug Book). The book says "treat before the insects mature with the fire ant control formula or plant oil products. |

Thank you! That looks about right. I haven't bought the book but want it. Sorry the photo posted so large. It's obnoxious! |

You can edit your original post and resize the photo. Or if you want you can remove it and link to this version of it. I saved it, cropped, and reduced the size. Attachment: fourlined-plant-bug-1a.jpg [ 208.65 KiB | Viewed 8354 times ] |

The page is a lot easier to read if you don't have to scroll sideways three monitor widths! Beetles are a challenge. I have to battle flea beetles again - I see them already on the eggplant. I sometimes think if I could invent the perfect handheld vacuum that would suck them directly off of the leaves. My answer to that has been to use a wide piece of painters masking tape, make a loop that is around my fingers and just roll it across the back of the leaves like a lint roller. I suppose you could use a lint roller. Anyway, I do that on eggplant for flea beetles and lace bugs. If you scroll through this long long thread of mine you'll see places where I have photos of bugs and some of the remedies I use. http://www.dirtdoctor.com/newforum/root/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=9033 |
