| Post subject: | Yellow squash very small |
My yellow squash is very small -- about 3" long and about as big as my pinkie finger. They look healthy -- they have been that size for 3 weeks. What do they need -- they don't seem to be growing. Carol |

Where are you? Here in Fort Worth we've had so much rain that my squash plants aren't very happy. However, I think the best general answer (to a question typically asked by new gardeners) is that when plants first start sending out female flowers they aren't always pollinated and in that case the squash shaped bloom won't get any larger but they might not fall off right away. It usually takes a few early flowers to bloom before pollinators discover the plants. |

I'm in Irving and I did have quite a few blooms that I noticed were male flowers -- however after that, I got female blooms and they became squash -- the blooms have fallen off, and the squash looks beautiful -- but not growing. The plants look healthy -- never seen this before. Thanks, Carol |

Keep an eye out for squash bugs, they stunt the growth of fruit also. They look like stink bugs. The one that usually ends my squash crop is the worm called the squash vine borer. Sometimes I can do a lengthwise slice in the stem and surgically remove them, or spray in some Bt in water. With those, one day the plant looks great, the next it drops dead, but in the meantime the fruit production drops. Keeping an eye on the plants and hand removing pests as they appear is a good start to keeping them going. |
