I'd be willing to bet that it still is a vine borer, and unless you can do some surgery to inject Bt into the stem, they're gonners.
I've occasionally managed to save the plants, but it's difficult. I put some discussion of that in the blog I've maintained
here for a while: vine borer treated with Bt injections. You have to be diligent and move up the plant. Also, I've sliced open the vine
lengthwise and pulled the worm out, then doused the vine with Bt. They can keep coming back, so keep an eye on it.

well i pulled them out and split the stem no worm. also no hole with dross coming out like the 2 that did have borers. treating with fungicides and BT both so we'll see.

How is the drainage in your garden? If the area stays too wet, this could easily happen. Try using a good layer of mulch and don't water as often so the plants have a chance to dry out a little. I've had low spots in the garden when this was the result (especially when not monitoring watering, just putting soaker hoses on a timer).

drainage good. 1-2" shredded tree mulch around plants and down rows.. mortality has occoured in may when we had little rain. water once a week in dry spells apx. 1/2-3/4 inch with sprinklers. newer planted squash doesn't seem to have this problem. just made a large reseeding 2 weeks ago. just seems to be plants on perimeter of garden. brown tissue and watery wounds.

Peroxide sounds like a good treatment then, and you could try potassium bicarbonate (another anti-fungal). https://www.dirtdoctor.com/garden/Potassium-Bicarbonate-Fungicide_vq398.htm

I guess I'd look at the location and figure out if something is encroaching on that part of the garden. Good luck!
