I have a small (less than 1/4 in), beetle looking bug that is eating at my mint and lavender. I have also seen them on my sage but they REALLY seem to like the mint and lavender the best. It has a bright red body. black wings with white vertical stripes. They do not eat through the leaves but leave black pock marks that show on both sides of the leaves. I live in Lewisville, my mother lives in southern Dallas and hasw these bugs also. Last year they seemed to disappear once it got hot. I cannot find this bug listed anywhere. Help |

This is most likely the four lined plant bug. |

I have these bugs on my mint plants. They probe and suck juice, then later their feeding place turns to a dark dot on the leaf. Soon their are many little dots covering the leaves. The bug name is Four Lined Plant Bug, or Poecilocapsus lineatus. The Link is http://www.cirrusimage.com/bugs_plant.htm |

The bug's head and body are red, but his wings are black with yellow or white verticle stripes. So from a view of his back (if he is not flying at the time)the only red that shows up is on this head. |

Are they completely red? It sounds like the four lined plant bug, but they are just red on the underside. I have a good photo on here at one time of these critters. Not sure if it is still here. Do a search for Nadine Haefs + photos and it might come up. If you could take a digital picture and post it, that woudl be great! You might also try http://www.BugID.com lol I guess I should have read the rest of the posts before commenting on this. I was going to delete this entry, but the BugID website is such a good resource! Also, these critters only cause a cosmetic damage to the plants. I have never heard of them destroying a crop of mint! |
