Hey.

My name is Todd. I am new to this board. I am a tree enthusiast and I live on florida's treasure coast. (I'm still looking for the gold, haven't found any yet).

I moved recently from north georgia, where there's many, many trees as you might have imagined. I am trying to get used to the barren landscape (in developed areas) here and the overabundance of palm trees and live oaks.
I am having an especially hard time adapting to stucco also.

Sorry, I don't mean to rant. Some of my interests include urban forestry. I like to read up on florida native forest trees and plants and I like to use them. I am also fond of the American Elm which I am trying to do my part to save by propogating them in my backyard nursery. So far I am having some pretty good luck with that.

Some of my favorite trees are the Florida Red Maple, Silver Maple, Florida Elm, Sycamores, Sugarberry, Thornless honeylocust, Eastern Red Cedar, Shumard Oak, Eastern Redbud, and of course... Pond Cypress and Bald Cypress. I also really like pines, and poplars.

I'm not a professional tree expert but I have done a lot of reading and studying in this area. Some of my experience might help answer a few questions. But I also might do a lot of complaining about how overplanted palm trees and live oaks are. I think I have that under control for a while though.

I look forward to spending many a-lunchbreak here. :D

Taxodium ascendens to all!

I agree on too many live oaks although it is a great tree. I designed several thousand new trees into the Frito Lay National Headquarters landscaping originally and hundreds have been added since. There are somewhere between 3 and 5 live oaks used. No palms, although I like them in the right places. The largest pond cypress trees in Dallas I not only planted but grew from seedlings. I love 'em. Let's talk any time.

Cool, Not only am I impressed with the largest taxodium ascendens, I also enjoy consuming Frito Lay products frequently.

We're coming up on seed season for taxodium. I have never grown then from seed but I have some cuttings currently awaiting roots. Do you have any experience with cuttings on these? I have noticed some resistance over the past week but I'm afraid to yank them out just yet.

I do have an appreciation for the live oaks and their benefits and hey, around here you take what you can get. I suppose a live oak is better than nothing (which is what most homes around here have). It's another result of people not caring, not doing the research and not wanting to spend any money or make any kind of effort.
