When is it time to put out eggshells in N. TX to assist the breeding diet? Is baking at 250 for 20 min optimum before putting out the shells? I read this was to make the shells more brittle. What say you?

My cardinals have started singing so nesting is not too far away. Early to mid-March might be good. Even if a little early in the year, it will give the birds time to find the shells.

Clean the egg shells thoroughly and break the egg shells into small pieces. Heat until the edges just start to turn brown. The time and temp you mentioned is often used.

The cleaning and heat sterilize the egg shells and prevent problems with salmonella.

Thanks for you input. You mentioned the cardinals singing. This am I was out and heard the most beautiful singing. I looked up in the tree and there was a gorgeous male cardinal. I had never heard their singing before. It was beautiful.
