One of my favorite birds is the American Avocet. They are fairly common along the Texas coast and some actually summer in the Texas Panhandle, which seems like a strange location for a shorebird. Like many species they are more colorful in their breeding plumage. Females have a shorter, more curved bill than the males. Female in breeding plumage. Photograph © Greg Lavaty. Male in winter plumage. Feels good to stretch. Photograph © Sam Crowe. |
