I was told that bird feeders should be cleaned on a regular basis. I agree with this, but was also told to use a small amount of bleach to clean with. I am not sure I agree with this part. Would orange oil be just as effective and in what amounts?

You may be able to "research" this. About a year ago it was discussed...and if I remember correctly, bleach was recommended. But don't take my word for it. Research the pros.

I would love to do some more research but don't know who to contact. Any ideas?

I would think that bleach would be completely safe. I'm pretty sure there's more chlorine in a glass of tap water than could be found on the feeder once rinsed and dried.

I would also be interested in hearing about natural alternatives to bleach for cleaning the bird feeder.

There is no reason to use bleach, orange oil or vinegar works just as well and doesn't have the harmful effects bleach has on the environment and you.
You might want to check this site out before you determine to use bleach on something. http://www.versatilevinegar.org/usesandtips.html

The original post was a question about birdfeeders, not baths. If we are talking about bird feeders - soap and water should do it. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. :) I think I will stick with the orange oil as I feel safer using it than the bleach. I'm sure vinegar is good also. I may try it next time. :?
