Post subject:  Where to see hawks

Last week I attended the Rio Grande Birding Festival in the Texas valley, headquarters in Harlingen. South Texas is the best place in the country for seeing raptors. 24 different raptor species were recorded including birds like White-tailed and Harris's Hawk.

The Corpus Christi Hawk Watch is pretty much over for the season, but is a great place to visit on the fall. Here are a couple of examples.

October 2, observers counted over 37,000 Broad-winged Hawks among the 16 raptor species. I think the high for the season was almost 100,000 Broad-winged Hawks in a single day.

Mississippi Kites peak a little earlier in the year, with over 12,000 recorded in a single day in late August.

Hawks do not like to migrate over water. So during their fall migration south they follow the coast and large numbers pass through Corpus Christi and the Texas valley on the way south.

Spring migration can be just as spectacular, with sometimes 100,000 or more Broad-winged Hawks heading out in the morning from areas like the Santa Anna National Wildlife Refuge.
