| Post subject: | Hurricane driven birds |
There have been a few reports of birds blown far north of their usual range by Hurricane Ike. I saw a report this morning of three Roseate Spoonbills on the north end of Lake Lavon that may have been pushed up from the Texas coast. A bird called a Magnificent Frigatebird is an uncommon bird along the Texas Coast in the summer, spending most of its time at sea. Its wingspan of over 7 feet is great for soaring and traveling long distances, but strong winds can really have an effect on its travels. Hurricane Ike traveled all the way to central New York, carrying a Magnificent Frigatebird from offshore Texas to a lake just a couple of miles from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The unfortunate bird died a couple of days after it was sighted, and is now part of the Cornell collection. |
