Post subject:  Hawk or Falcoln???

I live south of Greenville. Two Months ago, I saw the most majestic bird next to the Bald Eagle. Could someone help me identify it? I first saw him take a swoop at my chickens. They ran for cover under bushes. He was very large, Like an owl, at least 18 inches. He was heavy breasted, with a hawklike head. Steel gray wings and cap, white breast, underbelly and legs. He perched in a tree nearby. I was able to stand under the same tree and talk to him for about 5 minutes before he took flight. I hoped that whatever had been taking my chickens, it was him and not some stupid neighborhood dog that just kills for sport. The closest thing I could find in my bird feild guide was a Perigrine Falcoln, but he doesn't have a white belly, or range in this area.

Look up an image of a sharp-shinned hawk. We have a lot of them around my house, as well as the red-tailed hawk. The sharp-shinned hawk are very upright and are grayer than a red-tail.

Peregrine falcons have a rosy colored breast, black and white on the underside of the wings and gray on the outerside with a gray cap. It's not a large bird.

Also try Cooper's Hawk. They are a little larger than Sharp-shinned Hawks and may be more likely to tackle something as large as chicken.

The bird that I saw, had a bright white breast, not barred. He was also much more robust than the coopers hawk and sharp-shinned hawk. Oh if only I had my camera!

still puzzled.

I'm suspecting a red-tail then. Large white breast and the bird is quite large too.
