I heard a radio show talking abou this Texas Giant Tree, so I called for info.. They want $200 for a 4-5' tree. This is the site. http://www.nuplexanurseries.com/ Does anyone know what tree this is? is it a hard wood or soft wood? They said it grows 15-18 feet a yr... Any ideas? Thanks...

There's alot of ads in newspapers and magazines that tell you that these wonder plants will grow to huge heights/sizes when you plant them, only to find out later that they don't grow to that size where you live. When i was a kid I bought some tomato seeds that were suppose to grow to 3-5 lbs a fruit, well as my dad told me not here in Austin. They grew only about the size of a golf ball,I guess what I'm trying to say is if it sounds to good to be true....
Or you can full some of the people some of the time but.....

It's called an Empress tree. I think they look funny. I heard they are invasive, but lots of trees are. There is a neighbor who has one growing in his front yard. Looks wierd.

My neighbor asked me last fall about this Texas Giant that he heard advertised, and I researched it for him, and it is actually a type of Catalpa Tree. It looks and grows very similar to an empress tree, but it is not quite the same and not very hardy in the texas heat. I live north of DFW, and I know some neighbors with Catalpas, and they look fine until the late summer, when they look pretty sad with browned out leaves. I have two Empress Trees, and they are pretty tough. They actually did grow 10 feet a year. They are a little different looking with their huge leaves; I heard somewhere that they are in the fig family, and that makes sense, because their leaves are similar in texture to fig leaves. But I only paid about ten bucks for each tiny tree. I put them where I needed quick shade. I'm actually gonna cut down one of them this spring after it blooms, because it is 40 feet tall and is shading out a 20 foot Bur Oak that I planted around the same time. You can Google both Empress Tree or Catalpa and decide for yourself. Whatever you do, don't pay too much!!!

Bad idea . . . I wouldn't plant either tree, even for a short-term and temporary solution. If you want the tree 10 years from now, I'd choose a more responsible selection.
