I have them around my foundation and I see you recommend Abamectin for this problem. When I looked it up, there are so many different kinds. Which one is the best to get? Thanks! :?

There are fire ant treatments with Abemectin, but you probably have to go to a feed store, not a big box store to find it.

Thanks northwesterner... I was just looking around online for now. There are liquids, kinds you mix with water and spray on, granuals etc. Dirt Doctor said to just put a small amount next to the mound and see how fast they take it up. So not sure if it's like a paste, or granuals. I'd like to know which brand he recommends if possible.

I've used the granules and I buy them at Marshall Grain in Fort Worth. They have the Fertilome brand that uses spinosad (also an organic gardening tool). Don't broadcast any of these things, they kill beneficial insects also.

There are some products with essential oils and with orange oil, I don't know how they work. Avoid any of the products with pyrethrin - they may claim that it is "natural" but it is too deadly to too many creatures (humans included) to be using it. Pyrethrin was used for a while in organic programs, but the evidence came out against it as being simply too toxic. It originally came from chrysanthemums, but now is quite often a synthetic form.

Thank you again northwesterner! That's very helpful. I've been using orange oil mixed with water and a little bit of soap. It works pretty good, but uses up my orange oil very fast. Most times I have to re-treat several times before they're finally gone.

You may have to do a couple of things to chase out fire ants. Howard sprinkles dried molasses on them and they leave in a hurry.
