Post subject: | Additional food names for 'hidden' MSG |
Hello, I have been getting very serious migraines starting in the 80's and they had progressed rapidly in the 90's. I lost many days at work (and subsequently many jobs) due to the horrendous pain of migraines. I didn't know the cause, until I found that I was allergic to MSG, and the most common culprit for me is "natural flavor(s), natural flavoring(s)" and sometimes "spice". My migraines have reduced to almost nothing since avoiding these ingredients. Thank you. Sent in via info@dirtdoctor.com |

The "glutamate" in MSG (Mono Sodium Glutamate) is a flavor enhancer that used to be made from wheat gluten (hence the name). If you get headaches from MSG you should know that there are other foods out there that have naturally occurring glutamates to look out for. And in particular, if a label says the food has "hydrolyzed protein" then there is a lot of the naturally occurring glutamate in that ingredient. I found the Wikipedia entry on this was very good for refreshing my memory. I heard a program on KERA-FM a while back where they talked about this, but I don't remember now which show it was. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monosodium_glutamate |
