Here are some good reasons to grown your own food:

The main reason for increasing or maintaining edible gardening is to supplement household food supply — to help them save money on food.

There is nothing more local than food grown in your own backyard, your windowsills, or on patio containers.

Growing your own fruits and vegetables means that you know exactly what does and does not go into your food and exactly where it comes from.

You will get healthier in a number of ways. Not only will you end up eating more fruits and vegetables, but you will be getting added exercise. Did you know that you can burn as many calories in 45 minutes of gardening as you can in 30 minutes of aerobics? And, working in the garden reduces stress.

You will get a bigger variety of your favorite fruits and vegetables because you can choose from hundreds of different varieties and you can grow the things you like the best.

You can teach your children or grandchildren where their food actually comes from and that it doesn’t come from the supermarket but from the soil, the earth that we all depend on.

Another good reason: I won't say I got cancer from eating poorly but I can say that having beat that nasty SOB I am doing everything I can to ensure that I stay live and it stays dead.

There really is no good way to explain to someone what goes through your head when you get the call that your biopsy came back with a result of "Oh Sh1T!" but trust me... it does make you think and think hard.

Planting my salad stuff tomorrow, Tomatoes and Peppers in the garage for another week while I let the ground warm up.

Yeppers. I agree as well. I have FOUR reasons to be organic and grow my own food. They are my kiddos. I shouldn't call them kiddos, because they are all over 10 years old, but oh well....it's not like they are going to read this!!! :D They are all super healthy - only go to the Doc for their Well-Checks. Never miss school. Great Grades. Can't complain, not one bit. The only time they get ill is when they eat out with their friends at restaurants!

I agree with everything you said, except for the main reason. I believe the main reason should be to provide a healthier known source for your food, not to help them save money on food. That should be way down the list as reasons for growing your own food.

all good reasons....better food, fresher, more nutrition....fewer pesticides

don't rule out cost...if a lower income working family can save $50 a month on groceries by growing their own, they can maybe afford more variety of fruits and veg they wouldn't normally buy, increasing their variety and nutrition....a good thing.

my favorite reason is not cost....it is waste...if i am growing my own (salad greens, berries, melons, squashes, etc)...i can go out and harvest what i need that day....i am so tired of lettuce or berries going bad in the fridge because i don't eat it fast enough...better to go out an pick 10 leaves of what looks good, and let the rest grow...

Hello,

You will get a bigger variety of your favorite fruits and vegetables because you can choose from hundreds of different varieties and you can grow the things you like the best.
